Hyborian are a stoner metal band from the US and this is their debut album.
Although quite short at only 32 minutes in length, this is an album that’s undeniably enjoyable.
An album of huge riffs and equally huge vocals, this is a well-written collection of songs that’s hard to ignore or dislike; the band’s obvious ability and potential is as clear as day.
Hyborian Vol. 1 ably demonstrates a band that have taken their influences, (Mastodon, Baroness, Red Fang, High on Fire, etc.), and ran with them, creating infectious and catchy music that’s full of hooks and memorable tunes throughout the relatively brief playing time. Regarding the latter point, this is very much a case of quality over quantity.
With elements of sludge, doom, and psychedelic rock in their sound, as well as a pinch of progressive rock, this is a well-rounded release that covers a lot of bases and has plenty of depth to go along with its instant appeal. Hyborian essentially attempt to rock out big style during their playing time, which they’re wildly effective at, with considerable attitude and hefty riffs.
Also, as a side point; I imagine this would be amazing live.
If you’re partial to a bit of this kind of thing, then I heartily recommend that you check this out.
