review 1: I thought it would be an interesting story but found it had no depth. There were so many angles the author could have gone- it could have been darker and made more of the mystery of the missing friend (it was a bit of a let down how easily she found her friend in the end). It could have gone more into her developing mikado skills and becoming top girl at Mama's through the help of her new Japanese ex-geisha friend.
review 2: I've often said that I've learned almost everything I know about life from the novels I've read and the films I've watched. And while this statement is, clearly, tongue-in-cheek, there's truth in it. ... more reassure you that this book is anything but. The two major storylines are equally compelling - that of the naive English girl who comes to Tokyo to make a fast buck working as a hostess, and the ageing Mama-san telling her story to a desperate journalist - and I didn't see the ending coming at all. A brilliant twist, and I'm a reader who usually guesses denouements. Mystery and sex in a gripping tale. What's not to like? Wonderful stuff. less
