review 1: This book was a very interesting look at the life of John Hughes, the making of some of the most iconic films in history, and the effect they had on their generation. Gora examines the makings of the films Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club, St. Elmo's Fire, Pretty in Pink, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Some Kind of Wonderful, and Say Anything.It was really cool to hear about the hiring process, the writing and editing processes, and the lives of the actors of each of these movies. Though this was clearly written from a biased perspective, Gora gives a great account of the 80s teen film business. As someone a generation removed from the 80s, I can definitely attest to these films' staying power. The Breakfast Club literally changed my life - and I'm certain I won't be the ... morelast.
review 2: I don't know what I wanted from the book. In a way, it made me a little disappointed in myself. I thought of myself as a John Hughes kid only to get through it and realize that, honestly, THE BREAKFAST CLUB was the only one of these movies I really fixated on. I'm not sure I ever did see SOME KIND OF WONDERFUL. I saw the rest, but most only once and I only saw SAY ANYTHING a few years ago. There's a lot of behind-the-scenes elements that it reveals about how Hughes worked, which is revealing. But there's also a lot of fixation in here about whether or not these actors were permitted by the industry to live up to their potential. That's not a question I really care about, but I'm surprised, as I read it, that no one has done a movie about the biggest drama that does really play out in this story. The very Hughes'ian drama. Or maybe it's the anti-Hughes. Anyway, of what happened after the famous NEW YORK article that dubbed them the Brat Pack came out. The way that many of The Brat Pack actors were, in a lot of ways, a John Hughes like circle of friends, but when they got the moniker the Brat Pack, after the night out, and the story, that circle fell apart. They lost track of each other and drifted apart. That's a very Hughes'ian story, and I'm surprised some screenwriter hasn't pursued it. less
