review 1: Right off the bat I appreciate that a lot of research was put into this story regarding pagans and their rituals and beliefs. As the first in a series I think this started out really great introducing each character individually. Then the story broke out to highlight the path of Shauni in relation to the others. Initially I thought it would be hard to follow but inevitably it worked out very well. Shauni and the way her profile developed throughout the pages was quite remarkable. I can see the next book be becoming one about the path of another coven members journey.
review 2: WARNING POSSIBLE SPOILERSMy rating probably has less to do with the quality of the book and the story and more to do with the greater world building and story arc. For me the fact that t
... morehere are nine women who are all new to each other and to me was the problem. I was about two chapters in when I started making notes to try and keep them straight. The book suffered from all the "newness" - relationships between the women, knowledge of who they were and their destiny and collective history, their cats. Everyone aside from Shauni, Michael and Anna effectively made a series of cameos and these glimpses felt like they were trying too hard. Paige was too aggressive with no explanation, follow up or follow through. Kylie was just too perky and adorable. For me if each book followed the single woman as she made her journey to the island and then joined with a smaller group of others already established, this would have worked better and I would have felt less bombarded with details.Nora Roberts does this well with her trilogies. Pretty much a single new person, coming in to an established group of sorts - stuff happens. Be it, romantic, paranormal, friendships, etc - the smaller group focus allows you to get to know the characters as more than a name, a favourite colour, a cat and an ability. And yes, I understand that this isn't a Nora Roberts book.So essentially, if Ms Kates had the same story with a smaller group of women perhaps with the others to follow and join, I'm sure I would have enjoyed this book a great deal more. Instead I felt like I was speed dating these women throughout the book and it should have felt like a relationship. less
