review 1: I Love reading about the 1920's so when I saw this book at the library I grabbed it. Did it live up to my expectations;not really though I do always like reading about NYC & Greenwich Village in particular. The story concerns;two sisters in their early 20's,Rose & Ivy Adams, who are orphaned after their eccentric but lovable Botanist(hence their names) father passes away from a heart attack. They find out that they have a a half-brother,Asher. who lives in NYC & who will inherit their family home since he's the eldest sibling. So the sisters;conservative homebody Rose & Free-spirited dreamer Ivy leave their small up-state New York town & head for the big,bad city in search of him. The main problem with this book was although the sisters are supposedly very different,I had a... more difficult time figuring out who was narrating the story as they basically had similar speech patterns. The end up staying at a women's boarding house named Empire House in The Village & encounter various characters who might give them some clues to the whereabouts of their missing brother. The book did move fast but nothing really happened though some the secondary characters were fun, especially Cat, a glamorous dress designer with a mysterious past(& a speak-easy in the basement of her posh dress shop) Rose finds herself & romance with a war hero who works as a cook in boarding house, Ivy discovers that there's more to life than being a flighty flirt and both sisters truly "bond" as they look for their brother. The book ultimately wrapped everything up nice and neat and didn't really stay with me. Interestingly, "Empire Girls" was written by two authors;one who was the "voice" of Rose and the other taking on Ivy so why they both seemed so similar at times was surprising considering that. In conclusion a nice, fast read that could have been been more distinctive.
review 2: This book started off slowly for me mainly because both of the main characters were so irritating. But the authors clearly had a plan as each of the sisters came into her own. I enjoyed the mystery of the unknown brother and the characters the girls meet along the way. One drawback was the lack of voice given to the sisters. Each sister was given distinct traits that made them complete opposites, but their narratives sounded identical which was frustrating. less

Light and fluffy. Cute- not deep by any means. A nice light summer read with a laugh or two
