review 1: This came close to a 4.5 star book, so the best book I have read in quite awhile. I have read other books that are "told" through letters, but this was by far the best book with this format. The story of an unlikely friendship between a young mother and an "older" mother (only 41) but her child is grown up, is so touching and beautiful. I find that the writers are truly amazing at developing a relationship, and in turn hearing about WWII and death and mistakes, etc., only through letters is so refreshing. Each woman has to deal with her own challenges, yet makes it through those challenges only through the love of her "letter" friend. I did find myself wondering the whole time if they would ever get to see each other, so I was happy at the end they did get to meet. The hig... morehlight of this story is the descriptive letter storytelling of the time period. In some ways, it makes me think back to earlier times where receiving a detailed letter in the mail was better than a phone call or email :). Really, really enjoyed this book!
review 2: 3.5 stars. This had some rich writing and I especially enjoyed the character named Rita. Glory definitely had some good points, but her selfishness really turned me off. I honestly enjoyed getting to know each of them, and I did like Glory's excellent support of Rita through difficult times, and how she saw the good in Roylene and supported her. I was very grateful for Rita's wisdom and vision, her depth and strength of character though because if it was just about Glory, I never would have finished it. less
