Sentinels of New Orleans
review 1: DJ is a Green Congress wizard. She uses potions and rituals. But sometimes that is not enough to do her job correctly. She lives and works in New Orleans. Her latest assignment was to send Jean Lafitte back to the Beyond, which she did but it made him angry. He will be back in a few weeks when he gathers enough strength to get through the barrier between the world and the Beyond. Her boss and mentor, Gerry, who is the Sentinel for NO and a Red Congress Wizard, tells her to evacuate the city because a hurricane named Katrina is coming their way. She does not want to - hurricanes don't hit New Orleans. We all know that is not true anymore! Katrina hits and the barriers come down. Gerry is missing. The Elders order her back to NO and then give her a partner named Alex. T... morehey need to find Gerry and stop all the historical undead and supernaturals from coming into the world. They realize there is more going on here and the Elders don't seem to care. Soldiers are getting murdered. Wizards have strange markings in front of their homes. Just what is going on?
review 2: Drusilla Jaco is a junior wizard sentinel in New Orleans. She evacuates right before Hurricane Katrina strikes breaking levees and sending floodwaters throughout her city. The flooding and high winds cause a weakening of the borders between our world and the otherworld which the wizards have had control over. DJ's boss and mentor, Gerry, goes missing so the elders call her back in to town. The elders assign a gun-wielding, grenade-toting enforcer to be her partner. A serial killer using ritualistic magic is murdering relief soldiers, and an undead pirate either wants her dead or in his bed. DJ and her partner Alex trying to find Gerry as well as the serial killer. All this plus the multitude of fantastical creatures mentioned makes for some interesting reading. The novel was slow going at first and surprisingly again at the end, but the middle kept me glued. Though I found the characters a little more two-dimensional for my liking I have a feeling that that will change as the series progresses. The book kept me guessing, with nothing in your face obvious about the plot, and the light hint at romance has me wondering when DJ will wise up. There were a few laugh out loud moments throughout the book. One of which was at the end of the second paragraph. So if you venture into this book beware to not start reading it in a public place. I was at the doctors office and got quite a few strange looks. Now on to the second book of the series "River Road". less
