review 1: I loved this book... I wish I had the time and patience to read it to my children... I'm going to encourage my 8 year old to read it this week. It was written for middle readers or young adults.Suzanne Jurmain doesn't disappoint with this well-researched book that tells the story of Walter Reed and his colleagues who worked fast and furiously to find the cause of yellow fever, risking their own lives in the process. Walter Reed was certainly a man of integrity (choosing to make the risks known before doing human experiments... which was not always done in his time) and deserving of the attention and honor he received for his accomplishments. It was interesting, inspiring, and at times, sad. I was very touched by John Moran's decision to participate in the experiments wit... morehout taking the offered pay. It's hard to imaging being the guys who had to live around the dirty sheets and clothing of yellow fever victims that were soiled with blood, vomit, urine, and feces... how did they stay in that stinky room for 18 days?
review 2: Fascinating. Really. Scientists and doctors do put themselves in harm's way to try and find cures for diseases. And what some of the volunteers who assisted them went through (sleeping in a 95 degree room wearing and on top of soiled linens--think every bodily fluid possible from infected people all over them) just to prove how the disease was NOT transmitted? And doing it for three weeks?Mosquitos. I'm sure they have some useful purpose though I'm not sure what it is. less
