review 1: This story tells of a love that lingered long after Amelia lost Colin, who was the love of her life. Amelia had grown up in such a sheltered upbringing, having no close family or friends of her own. So naturally she falls for Colin, the only friend she ever had. The only problem being that Colin is way beneath the likes of Amelia and so he tries hard to stay away from her when they are older. On a night where Colin tries to protect Amelia he is shot and Amelia assumes killed. Six years later and Amelia has still not forgotten the love she had for Colin. She still loves him like she did many years ago so when this masked stranger shows up she is surprised to have feelings for him, knowing that these feelings she has only ever felt for Colin, even though she is about to marr... morey another man. Unbeknownst to Amelia this man is one and the same and when she finds out that the masked man is Colin she naturally feels betrayed. She feels like Colin has lived the last six years fine without her, happily while she has been left behind to mourn for him, which I can completely understand. I'm glad Amelia wasn't such a push over though, when she thought she was betrayed by the lie she was willing to walk away even though she loved him dearly. Good thing though that Colin realised there was no way he was going to give up on her after everything he did for her.
review 2: I was intrigued by this book because I love Sylvia Day, am a big fan of the Crossfire Series and I love historical romances. I did not read the first two books in the series but I feel like it is ok because we are given enough back story in the book and it can be read as a stand alone. To recap, Amelia is a Viscount’s daughter who has been sheltered all her life… first by her father and now by her sister and brother in law. As a young girl she fell passionately in love with gypsy who was a stable boy in her father’s employ. Of course it was not acceptable for them to be together so Colin tried to keep his distance, but stolen kisses only fueled their forbidden love. After Colin risked and assumedly lost his life rescuing Amelia from her father’s enemies, she is thrown into deep despair. She can never quite let go of her lost love and let herself love another. She is resigned to marry Ware a man whom she has deep affection for as her closest friend and confidant. Just as she finally agrees to the marriage of convenience, a masked man, the mysterious Count Montoya, steps into her life at a ball, finally waking her from the numbness her life has become. Unbeknown to her, her Colin didn’t parish after all, but has been off trying to better his position in life and to amass a fortune so that he can return to Amelia one day. On the eve of his return to England to claim her as Count Montoya, he witnesses a murder and is mistakenly blamed for a rogue agent’s crime. Now on the run he finds himself unable to go forward with his plans until he can find away to clear his name. My feedback: This book had highs and lows for me. Amelia was such a confusing character. She was bold and brazen in one moment and a sheltered wall flower in the next. She absolutely refused to heal and move on from her lost love Colin and had no sexual desire for Ware or any other, but gives in to her attraction to Count Montoya immediately without even unmasking him. I know that we are supposed to accept this because it is actually Colin, but it just seemed a little forced to me. Perhaps that is because we are briefly told their history in flashbacks and didn’t really experience them. Now don’t get me wrong it is HOT when she does give in… off the charts HOT. I loved the passion in the love scenes in this book but something just didn’t fit. I hated that loveless sex was portrayed as recreation for men and justified throughout the book for both Colin and Ware… but I understood it. Unfortunately men are different from woman and sometimes sex is just sex, a physical act, for them. Even though it didn’t sit well with me, it was realistically written. Although it is basically Colin & Amelia's story, the whole of the story is not just romance, there is mystery, murder, hidden identity, fighting... it has a little bit of everything. All in all I found it to be an enjoyable read. Not on the level of every other Sylvia Day book I have read, but a good period romance/drama all the same. It is worth the read and I will definitely be going back to read the other two books in the series as I am very intrigued by Amelia’s sister & St. John’s story. less
