review 1: Taking the Heat follows Layla and Brian as they cross the country in a breathtaking story. Brian and Layla have a detailed history that is revealed well throughout the story. The story starts off with a second chance for both of these characters to reunite once more, as Brian saves Layla and protects her as he escorts her to provide testimony in a very important case. The journey that Brian and Layla take over the next three days is a whirlwind, but will have you so engrossed you wont be able to put the book down.The characters themselves a magnificent, and Day does a great job of meshing their past, present, and future together in one story. The journey these characters take over the course of the story is a profound one, and you will have no choice but to fall in love wi... moreth Brian and Layla as you read. Day presents another great story, that will make you wonder where the Shadow Stalker series has been! The plot line of the story is very fast paced, and will have you on the edge of your seat. Day does another amazing job of balancing a great story, with some very hot scenes that makes for an overall fantastic story.This was truly a great read, and it will leave you wanting more. (And definitely wanting a real life encounter with one of the male Shadow Stalker characters)
review 2: Setting: safe house to Baltimore/Washington airport; across the country to San Diego court;Theme: love and trust; safety; doing right;Characters:Brian Simmons: Deputy U.S. Marshal, Shadow Stalkers; found a family with the Creeds, and fell in love with the daughter… went into the service with the brother – and into the Seals with the brother… then to the Marshals (as Layla afraid for him) and into Shadow Stalkers; loves Layla, but let her go, thinking she was too young, and would regret being with him without experiencing life – and his pride got in the way too…Layla Creed: met Brian when she was 16, and fell in love – wearing a tshirt of his to bed; brother and father follow family tradition of military service, both died in service… gave Brian ultimatum when she turned 18, sex with me now or she’d find another… a year of mad lovemaking… and then she broke up when he went into Shadow Stalkers without consulting her…Jack and Rachel Killigrew: Fellow Shadow Stalker and his love; they spend a night with them on their trek, helping to crystallize their commitment to one another and understanding of the other’s needs via their relationship;Summary:2 years ago Layla in Tijuana, and ends up in middle of a shoot out, getting to safety with the DEA agent, and seeing the drug gang who shot him… 2 years in witness protection, time to testify… on way out of safe house, it is bombed and Brian as a last minute replacement knocks her down to protect her, then takes her on the run… obvious internal mole, so he gets a buddy to give him his car, and they head across country… and he realizes he’s been given a 2nd chance to make it right.Driving, talking, sexing, understanding… and they figure out which is turned… he sends her to court with jack, and he pretends to be holeing up in nearby hotel… the buddy who gives him the car is the one who comes in to kill them – they set up his college daughter with a syndicate boyfriend… And after 1st day of testifying, he is in the witness room waiting for her… and proposes to her, having arranged to go into witness protection with her, where they will open their own security firm… ahhhh less
