review 1: The Guest Cat is a Japanese novella with definite similarities to Murakami's poetical style, however it fell far short of the mark for me. I'll be the first to admit to not really being a "cat person", so maybe the profound impact of a cat on an apathetic couple didn't resonate with me. I reached the end and wondered whether there was anything for me to take from the reading. Unfortunately, the reasons for its international success passed over my head.
review 2: This book made me feel very nostalgic, being a cat owner myself and being able to relate to the main protagonist. The book was full to the brim with metaphor and made you think about people in general and our behaviors. In particular, i enjoyed the relationship with Chibi that the couple inherits and h
... moreow they progress in each others lives. For me, i didn't feel heart broken when the cat died as the protagonist did not express sorrow but a sense of loss at having the routine taken away. And when the rest of the novel progresses you start to see parallelisms within people and animals and how they try to fill the hole Chibi left with another cat which never quit lived up to the expectations of Chibi, as to be expected. The book left me thinking how cats come into our lives and although they are independent, they depend on us for support and vise versa. So when that support is taken away, and not having been granted closure, you are left with the void of emotion through the loss of a friend, not just a pet. less
