review 1: A lovely, relaxing book to read. Nothing too momentous happens, but that's just fine. You don't need to know lots about Japan to appreciate this book, it'll appeal to anyone who likes a reasonably short, relaxing read. It's a book that reminds you that you really need to appreciate the small things in life. That...and it made me really want to have my own cat! (And this is not a spoiler but...the author, many years later, does now have a cat, from reading the short biography on the back cover).

... moreay or two, but I suspect the beauty of its prose will remain in my mind for days to come. Such a clever little story that's more about setting a mood than revealing a plot. The language is poetic and full of imagery. And I, not even a cat lover, really quite enjoyed it! less
