review 1: I tried very hard to enjoy this novel, but it just didn't work for me. The storyline looked promising but I struggled with the way it unfolded. I didn't feel engaged for the first 130 pages. Then a crisis hooked me and I read forward. It got slow again. And then in the last part of the book, everything raced to a conclusion. The only character I really connected with was the protagonist. None of the other characters garnered my empathy.
