review 1: This book was ... strange. First, the description on the back cover of my edition did not anywhere closely resemble what happened in the book - and two of the statements were false! It doesn't matter but I found it so odd. I really liked the characters & the beginning of the story held enough promise that I kept reading, even when the story stopped making sense. The only bright spot was the asides at the beginning of each chapter. They had nothing to do with the story, but I made a list of all the animals I had never heard of so I could go look them up. That's something, right?
review 2: I loved this book! It is a great story, un-put-down-able! I picked it up because I know nothing about the Congo diamond mines, and I enjoy historical fiction. It ... moreis sheer enjoyment. The cast of characters is very colorful. They are all highly entertaining and each is distinct. You have the natives, both men and women, the Europeans - English, Belgians, and of course, American missionaries. Each character has their own colorful story. It has a surprise ending. I can hardly wait to read it again - terrific tale of triumph! less
