review 1: - A very interesting read...- I actually did not find myself getting much into it until the latter half, when Berger's themes of master/slave, shame vs. consciousness, the economics, politics, class warfare of sex & porn etc...really came to fruition.- It really made me think and the reader can understand or see Myra's conflicted feelings of empowerment, taking charge of her sexuality & what she wants vs. feeling used or abused by Elijah & Gayl.- It was not just a typical"coming of age" story about a sexually curious teenage girl...Berger has a lot of things to say and as I reader, I respect that.- It can be uncomfortable for some, but like Mario Vargas Llosa has said, GOOD FICTION SHOULD MAKE YOU UNEASY.- So if you're looking for something different & edgy, I would recomm... moreend this book. It's a quick read.
review 2: Sometimes I think I consume media in a parallel universe so I looked up book awards and this won one from the Believer so I decided to give it a try. I guess it's a more literate version of 50 Shades of Gray. Pretty well-written, very uncomfortable look at a teenage girl's budding sexuality. No comment wrt its universality. I guess this is erotica, not smut but I have no interest in exploring the genre further.Another literary novel (novella?) whose characters are well-read, which is increasingly boring but seemingly inescapable. Oh well. less

A disturbing yet brilliant coming-of-age/erotica novel.
