review 1: This is one of the better books in this series and I enjoyed reading it. My biggest complaint is that I really feel these books should be read out of order (reading this one before the will of the empress). Partly because I felt like I knew what was going to happen before starting this book and partly because I felt like I was missing part of the story when I read the will of the empress. Similar to the other books in this series, this book also needed more side-characters (and better developed side-characters). This one was better than average in this regard, but it still felt a bit lacking. If I had to re-read this series over, I would read this one before the will of the empress and think it would have been better in that order.
review 2: This one was the
... more darkest of the Circle of Magic universe books. It made me cry more than once. War is war and there are terrible people who do terrible things, even in fantasy worlds (or especially in them, maybe). Nevertheless, I'd put this as one of the better books in this universe. Briar and Evvy are a couple of my favorites. Gyongxe (the country they defend in the war) shows a new aspect of this unviverse, both in geography, and in religion. The Tortall books often include interaction between gods, mortals, and immortals. Until now, gods in the Circle of Magic books were prayed to, but not really seen to intervene much in human affairs. There are still plenty of questions to be asked about how the gods operate, but this provided some good insight, and anyway, that is not so much the point of these books as is the human interactions and their own problem-solving skills. Though it was kinda Deus ex machina for the final win in the end, and I saw that coming a mile away, I feel that it didn't detract from everything that the characters managed on their own. I'm still not quite sure why Rosethorn's side quest was entirely necessary, and I wish there had been a little more deatil about the end of it. I liked the shamans of Gyongxe, and that from them we got to see an entirely different way of doing magic (and also with the mages of Yanjing, though their methods are less impressive and clearly have some drawbacks when faced with Briar, Evvy, and Rosethorn's magics). The new travelling companion they gain from this journey is also one of my new favorite characters. less

4.5 stars. Not as good as the original books, but still very strong characters and a steady plot.
