review 1: To say this book disgusted me doesn't say enough. These woman had very important lessons to share with young girls who don't see science as something they can go into or dare to dream about what they can accomplish in their careers. The astronauts were in the field in a time when it was very unusual for women of any race to be in this field. That is simply history. An ugly history, yet history. I think it takes a very accomplished writer to be able to write that history without coming off as bitter or biased. This isn't the author to do it. Even in present times, she comes off as man hating and "race" hating. Not the message for any young female that I would want to learn about the courage and determination of these pioneering women. These women have to have other books wr... moreitten about them because this is one author who failed to do them justice. I choked this book down for the review. If I could have given it zero stars and had it reflect in the rating, I would have.
review 2: This was such a great book. It was infuriating that the "Mercury 13" didn't ever get to go into space, despite acing the tests (and complaining less than) the Mercury 7, all of whom did get to go. But these women paved the way for others to continue in their stead, and this book tells the heartwarming and inspiring story of the women who dared to dream that they could be astronauts. Highly recommended. less
