review 1: Taking advantage of the Mindfulness wave Tara Brach shows that the trend to conflate Western Psychology practices with Buddhist influenced thought is still cresting. With suitable acronym self-tests and plenty of Rumi poetry she leads the reader through her own journey to enlightenment. While I don't think this is truly a money maker self-help genre mashup I think it could very well slide into that. I get the feeling that in the true sense of Buddhist teaching the author shows what has worked for her in her journey and gives the reader concrete ways to try these methods for themselves and apply what may work for them. I read an ebook version on a Kobo and was suitably impressed with the formatting and navigation. I am still waiting for the day when multimedia are included ... moreand as intuitively used. For example, the several guided meditations could have been incorporated into the book and played as the reader was invited to take a side-tip into self-awareness or meditation. Worth a read and it could be of use to those seeking a more western approach to their mindfulness.
review 2: Highly recommend. The author battles a rare illness and chronic pain so I could relate to her story, but those of her patients and students are varied and touching, too. That male patients were represented should put men at ease if they're curious about Buddhism and meditation but a bit embarrassed about it. That she can find such peace, compassion, and love for life despite her suffering inspires. She includes easy-to-follow meditations at chapter ends that highlight what you've just read. I'm looking forward to reading her other book, Radical Acceptance. less
