Exalted
review 1: Imagine a world you lived in where there are no emotions. No laughing, crying, smiling, and no falling in love. Even grief and anger do not exist. All that there is is the driving need to be strong and to defend the United Republic of the Saved. It is a post-apocalyptic America. Out of the ashes of America rose a new colony of survivors. And within those survivors were those that could do extraordinary things. "They were strong, fast, and fearless. They were gods." These survivors were called the Exalted, and they became defenders of the Republic.Mena has grown up in the world of the Republic. At the age of 5, she left her parents' home and lived in a dorm with other children her age. They start taking a purple pill called the Pump. They were told it was a vitamin to make ... morethem grow faster and stronger. All Exalted are very strong and fast, and tall. This pill, though, was the controlling factor in their lives. They no longer had emotions about anything or anyone. They did not love, not even their parents. But when Mena meets an outsider named Ryker, he tells her getting off the Pump would make her come alive and be stronger. And she wants to be stronger. So she does. Mena starts feeling all types of emotions. And she starts having feelings toward her friend Ethan, and for Ryker.Loved this book! It totally sucked me in! This society was like a cult! And I have not yet read a book like this one so this whole idea of wiping someone's emotions to control them is scary, but also a rather plausible story. If something did happen to society and we had to start over again, those growing up within it would know no better than what we are told. It is like going to history class. Most people only know what is in the books. They don't know the whole story or whether this was real or just what they were taught. But living without emotions is such a hollow life. Being married now becomes nothing more than a breeding program. And this was Mena's world.I highly recommend this book! It will put you in a world like no other!
review 2: Didn't love this book as much as I thought I would. I thought it was slow and too repetitive. The little girl was really random. The ending...The whole book were waiting for this decision, will she finish the trials or will she leave with Ryker. The ending just sucked and I'm all for Clift hangers but I don't really think we got that. I just didn't get Elizabeth choices to end the book. Overall I was disappointed. less
