review 1: I was intrigued by this book when a friend borrowed it and knew I wanted to read it.This one is set around the aftermath of World War 2 and the golden age of Hollywood. It tells the story of Frances "Franny" and her daughter, Cara. They go through long journeys of hardships and happiness.The setting was really cool. I love reading about the irish country side and their way of life. This book is written in an utterly realistic way. The harshness is not skipped as well. It is shown in full yet the beauty remains.Mother and daughter experience similar situations ironically. Thrown into unexpected situations and forced to grow up quickly in every way that mattered. They had spirit and strength which I love in female characters. No one wants a damsel in distress. I felt Cara wa... mores more admirable compared to Franny. Granted Franny got through to the cut throat world of glitz and glamour where appearances are deceiving. The sleeziness of how some get a chance to make it big is just sad and shockingly true.This felt like a young adult novel at times as the Franny and Cara were both at very young ages for better part of the book. It showed their life story, how they experienced things as teenagers and what they went through then.There is mystery thoroughout the novel and it switches povs and periods quite alot. The opening scene is in the present while the next dives into the past. It was a little difficult to keep track of the timeline but managable.I applaud the author for the range she has, from writing a great mystery to penning a steamy sex scene. The book did not seem to have a very main theme as it jumps here and there. In fact it seemd like a jumble of themes: life. The ups and downs, the sad reality and moments of weakness and being unsure. Yet you rise in times of crisis and the most saddest moments can become the happiest. The message of appearances not being what they are is good and bad. They shown how much people can speculate when they see somehing but the truth is entirely different.I had my doubts on Max and Franny at first, it was so fast moving - their relationship that is and I felt that he just wanted her so he could own her. Rich businessmen is apparently a very popular character in the fiction world right now and while it might seem typical for a man of high power and status to want to dominate his wife, it might not always be the case. Their story is almost unbelievable but as the pages go, you see a secret, untold side which picks at your heart strings. Much more than a romance novel would. I can even go as far to say that this has as much impact as a Nicholas Sparks novel and that says plenty.The end was a little underwhelming but the story was fantastic, it took me into the past and made me feel like I was right there. The errors of a person, when does that become too much and not able to save anything from? it depends...on us.
review 2: Aufgewachsen in der ländlichen Idylle von Cork in Irland, will die 17 jährige Franny Healy nur eines, raus aus der dörflichen Enge und ein Weltstar werden. Zunächst hält sie den attraktiven Erntehelfer, für ihre Fahrkarte in die weite Welt, doch der lässt sie ganz schnell sitzen, als er erfährt, dass sie schwanger ist. Sie schlägt sich allein bis nach London durch, wo sie sich und ihr Kind mit Putzen über Wasser hält, aber sie weiß sie ist zu höherem berufen und sie soll tatsächlich ihre Chance bekommen. Als ein Produzent sie singen hört und sie die Besetzungscouch meistert, stellt er sie vor die Wahl entweder Hollywood oder Mutter sein, denn für ihre Tochter ist kein Platz in der glitzernden Filmmetropole. Also opfert sie Cara für ihren Traum und führt schon bald ein Leben in Luxus und Glamour. Doch wohin hat es sie letztendlich gebracht, als Frau eines Milliardärs vergehen ihre Tage nur quälend langsam, bis sie bei einem tragischen Unfall ums Leben kommt, der Hollywood wenigstens für fünf Minuten erschüttert. Cara hingegen führt eine lieblose Kindheit bei ihrer Großmutter, entgeht einer Vergewaltigung und der Härte einer Beziehung zu einem Kleinkriminellen und doch geht sie gestärkt daraus hervor und macht sich dann nach Jahren auf die Suche nach der Frau, die sie zurückgelassen hat. Nachdem ich „Das Haus der Melvilles“ gelesen hatte und ich den Schreibstil von Tara Hyland bezaubernd fand, konnte ich es kaum erwarten „Die vergessene Frau“ zu lesen. Und zunächst wurde ich auch wieder eingesogen in die Geschichte um die flatterhafte junge Franny und ihren Weg zum Ruhm. Aber nach ungefähr der Hälfte, hatte ich das Gefühl die Autorin hat die Lust an der Story verloren. Alles wurde nur noch episodenhaft erzählt und manchmal so im Schnelldurchlauf, dass mein Gefühl für die Charaktere dabei auf der Strecke blieb. Und trotz der über 600 Seiten las sich das Ganze dann wie eine Zusammenfassung eines anderen Buches. Vielleicht hätte es geholfen, weniger Protagonisten in die Geschichte zu verweben oder vielleicht nicht unbedingt das Leben eines jeden Einzigen beschreiben zu wollen. Ich hätte zum Beispiel gern mehr darüber gelesen, wie Cara mit einer alzheimerkranken Großmutter klar kam, ohne Hilfe. Oder über ihre Zeit bei der Zeitung, als sie sich als junges Mädchen in eine Männerdomäne durchsetzen musste. Das große Geheimnis, dass dann den Spannungsbogen schlagen sollte, hat mich gar nicht mehr so richtig interessiert, denn ich war auf zu vielen Nebenschauplätzen zu Gange, als das ich noch ein großes Ganzes zu erfassen vermochte.Aber im Großen und Ganzen wird man bei diesem Buch ganz gut unterhalten, da der Schreibstil der Autorin eine Leichtigkeit vermittelt, auch wenn er stroposkoplichtartig die einzelnen Charaktere immer mal kurz beleuchtet. Es hat nur einfach meinen Erwartungen nicht standhalten können. less
