review 1: I la-la-la-loved it !!!There is a reason why I like to read books written in first person. It makes you understand the character better, relate to them more. But Amplified is one of those rare books that made me become the main character Jasmine. I felt as if I was her inside out, feeling exactly what she feels, and it was quite freaky to be honest. There was that one part where Jasmine was having her first stage fright, and boy I was with her 100%. Every nerve in my body was terrified just like hers if not more. I felt sick and I needed to bolt, but as a reader I could not read on, either stop or skip that part. But of course I'm not a quitter neither is Jasmine, so we both went through that horrific scene and came out like we want to bury ourselves away from the world.Do... more you see it?? The author made me become her. I don't even know how she did it. It's not that writing style was anything magically different. Don't get me wrong, it was brilliant, very well written and super easy to get into. I just can't comprehend how she did it!!But anyway, this story kind of gives the same message away as I read in other stories; about finding yourself, doing what you want to do, not what others want you to do, and also about second chances. But it differed because of the music element in Amplified. I'm really impressed how much the author dwelled on the music part. Normally it's just there but not in so much depth. After reading amplified I could tell you do much about rock music. Even though I never really listened to rock but I could explain exactly why a person would love this sort of tune. The rest of the characters were all fun to read. I'm glad that the author adds a little story of their own behind each band mates, giving them more life, instead of just being there. Veta was my favourite, she was a totally different type of 'girl best friend' and super enjoyable to read. Then there's Sean who plays the love interest. Sean and Jasmine didn't hit off right away, started off on the wrong foot, but the way the relationship changed was so gradual that you didn't even notice it till they're in each other's face. I find it commendable actually, that it wasn't a switch of light, and they were in love. Even when they had their fight, there was a purpose behind it, they needed it to sort themselves out first. Normally I'm satisfied with contemporary books being a stand alone cause there's so much you can do if the story continues and it usually goes down hill. But with this, I really want more, from these characters, from the band C-side, and I think there is more to deliver. Which is why I'm so glad there'd a second book called Encore !!!
review 2: Loved this book. Many great scenes about what it's like to perform music live - the fear, the rush, the hard work... My biggest complaint is that i wish the lyrics had not been presented as dialogue, but rather as poetry. I understand why the author chose to do this (so people wouldn't just skip them - like everyone does when reading TLOTR), but it was jarring. Other than that, this was one of those books that kept me from doing every thing else.Excuse me, while I go clean the house now.... less
