review 1: PRECINCT 13 is a cute medical examiner meets police procedural mash-up urban fantasy. Due to it's lighter approach and mild romantic elements, the publisher bills it as a paranormal romance, but quite frankly it's a little too PG-14 for that genre. What it is though, is a light, entertaining read. The story centres on Alex, a med-school drop-out who made a bet with her best friend and suddenly finds herself working as the new county coroner in Pierre, South Dakota. Little does she know that her new job is going to take her back down a path she has been trying to leave behind. Alex has always felt just a little (okay, maybe a lot) crazy. She’s always seen things that shouldn’t–couldn’t be real. Now in a new town, with a new job, away from a boyfriend who was ‘e... morenabling’ her delusions, Alex is ready for a fresh non-magical start. Instead, after a series of bizarre events, she ends up as the medical liaison for Precinct 13, the magical branch of the local law enforcement. Suddenly, Alex finds out that magic is more real than she ever imagined. My only complaint about this book is that Hallaway for some reason or other seems to have decided to start the story part way through. There is a whole back story regarding the past Alex is running from that seems to be missing and there are so many cryptic references to her old life and a scary incident with her boyfriend and stepmother, but we are never really given the whole story. Instead of being a tantalizing mysterious past, it just ends up being annoying, leaving you feeling like you've accidentally started with book two in the series.Despite this, the book was an enjoyable read. Alex has spunk and a great voice that quickly pulls you into her story. Hallaway has also created a host of interesting supporting characters, setting the scene for what will hopefully be a series.
review 2: "Precinct 13" is the first book I've read by Tate Hallaway but not the last. I was pleasantly surprised by the depth of this book. There were a few OMG out loud moments, which are increasingly rare with the explosion of urban fantasy works. Although, to be fair, since it takes place in Pierre, South Dakota, I'm not sure how "urban" it is. ; )The characters were all unique and very flawed. Our protagonist is warm, witty and a little bit damaged and a pleasure to read. Her complicated relationship with the world around her is well depicted. The plot moves at a very brisk pace yet allows enough time for world-building details. Several points struck me about the work;- there were no info-dumps- the world-building was seamless and very coherent- there is more explosive potential in the setting that it feels like an atomic bomb- dialogue was good, not great- the author took some serious chances in the work and they all paid off in spades.I felt this was a rather quick read and am looking forward to reading more by the author. less
