review 1: There are lots of hiccups in this book. Just when you think you're following it, the character, place, and/or plot changes without warning and you're forced to go back and reread for clarity. Too much stereotyping makes characters seem like caricatures and there's far too much of a focus on who is wearing what. It makes the book feel pretentious and it's as if the author has no sensitivity to small towns and their denizens. I do give it credit for telling a good story and for keeping me interested.

The novel uses two parallel stor... morey lines to shed light not only on the current murder case and several past murder cases but also on the makings of the human soul and our responsibility for our own actions. The Nellies once challenged the mining God of Lost Creek and were hung for their trouble; today, those powers are threatened again. And as these two stories develop we learn a little bit more about who we are. less
