review 1: I think the authors did a great job at getting the period feel right. The Holmes-like case was also very authentic.They kept Holmes mostly in character, which must have been hard as just showing him in a relationship could be considered OOC. I did work out who-done-it before the end; it would have been difficult, with 21st-century eyes, not to.I'd recommend this to crime readers and lovers of historical m/m in general.
review 2: This book was recommended to me with the words “it’s as if Arthur Conan Doyle had written fanfiction”. Well, it’s not. Not quite. I can understand the reason behind this assumption which doesn’t mean that I would necessarily support it. The thing that bothers me the most is the American spelling and the American vocabulary. So... more even though Arthur Conan Doyle’s style was imitated quite nicely, some things don’t fit.Apart from that, it was a nice read, especially for someone who knows a thing or two about fanfiction. I was surprised to discover that there was, in fact, a case and that the case was so important that it took up most of the book. Arthur Conan Doyle would probably have solved it differently, with less dead murderers. Also, it was pretty easy to see through everything. By chapter 3 I knew who the then not yet murderer was. The characterisation was done quite nicely as well, even though some of the characters were a bit too two-dimensional, which, if you think about it, fits the claim that Arthur Conan Doyle could’ve written this. But the most important thing here is that I had a lot of fun reading it. less
