review 1: A fantastic book, fluent, though it contains a lot of wisdom (I had to look up several things!). I would have given it 4, or even 5 stars, but close to the end something happens. Another person reaveals something, and the good, and very human, doctor does - nothing! It can be that the person who reveals, is remembering things totally wrong. But in that case, knowing the doctor is a psychiatrist, why doesn't he react?!? Suddenly the good doctor becomes another, not so good person.
review 2: I didn't know quite what to make of this one. It was certainly well written, and the lack of narrative thrust meant it was the perfect before-bed book: it's easy to spend a chapter wandering around with Julius around a city. And there's a revelation late in the book that puts
... more everything before it into question, and makes you reconsider the entire book. But all in all I thought it was just a little too glancing, too elusive, the author's intent hard to grasp. less

Great book, with beautifull small stories that illustrate the great migration issues of our time.

Lovely prose. Exhausting intellectual show-off. Tiring descriptions. Annoying protagonist.

A slow burn. Almost put it down early on but his rhythm and reflections draw you in.
Mickey
The emperor has no clothes; this book takes you nowhere and leads you there slowly.
