review 1: I really wanted to love this book, it just did not connect for me. There was something about the dialogue that felt flat. It had witty moments but they just did not fell light. Mostly I was annoyed with Emily, I know this is a historical but she was not to my liking. I wanted more fire and spunk from her. I was also not pleased with the hero, Jared married another woman and only came sniffing around again after she died. Nope not something I am generally a fan. The story is nicely done, it just feels dry and did not give me warm fuzzies. I am not really sure what to expect in the brother's books either. They were very overbearing and really ticked me off.I listened to the audiobook narrated by Pearl Hewitt, who does a great job. She has a really lovely voice that makes the... more read more enjoyable. Her pace is swift and really moves along keeping the pace steady. Her voices were fabulous and really consistent. I will definitely look for more of her work.I already have the second book in the series, so I will give it a listen, but I am not sure if it is more like this. I really could have used more intrigue and less of the romance. Perhaps it was just my mood.Disclosure - I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts, opinions and ratings are my own.
review 2: 3 starsIt was a well written book with witty characters and humorous dialogue. In fact I liked the writing so much that I’ll definitely read more books by the talented Teresa McCarthy. The three star rating was more about the infuriating characters that anything else. First of all Jared. He was in love with our heroine, got rejected, got married and now he’s a widower and back in our heroine’s life. Ah Jared, I have so many things to tell you. First, when you decided you wanted to marry Emily you should sit down and talk to her. Tell her EVERYTHING not just bits so we can have some more story. It’s not so hard. Communication is said to be the basic key to a successful relationship. Badly done Jared, badly done! And then Emily.. why so inconsistent? Stop changing your mind with every move Jared does. You either love him and want to marry him or you don’t and you move on. Stop making things complicated. What I loved: the secondary characters and their story. What I hated: that cover! The dress is so modern for a historical romance.Favorite quote:“Let your heart no longer hold the shadow of yesterday, but only the promise of tomorrow”.Recommended for fans of clean and humorous historical romance. less
