review 1: I almost put this book down and stopped when started reading it. It had a very slow buildup, and I was worried the book would not actually get to any of the main plot that is supposed to encompass the entire story. I trudged on, and suddenly action started occurring. Though the beginning had me bored, it did give me a chance to get to know the protagonist, Sophie, well, as well as some other characters involved.Once the action started happening, this book was hard to put down. And sat and read to the end with few breaks so I could find out just what happens. And my favorite parts of the books (besides the romance) were the Egyptian folklore that is weaved in with the story. It's all really fascinating to read about.Overall, I would say this book was okay. It's serio... moreus downfall was it's slow start. Otherwise, this book had some great story-lines and enticing action.
review 2: I've been wanting to read this book for a long time and now I have I feel a bit disappointed. Don't get me wrong, the writing is great and the plot is very thought out, but I just didn't enjoy it that much.It starts off really well. It's Sophie's first day back at school and she is determined to get straight A's for the rest of high school so she can get a scholarship to her dream university. Even though she is surrounded in L.A. by people in the acting industry, and a mum who wants her to start acting, Sophie wants to study History like her dad. Then it all changes once she falls for the heartthrob Nate Werner and he tells her a terrible secret, he's cursed and he's slowly going insane. Then they go on a big adventure to New York to find a cure. Now, I have a great love for this plot because I love Egyptian history and mythology. And I also love romance. But what ruined a lot of the book for me is that Sophie seemed to become obsessed with Nate. It got so bad that her grades starting dropping and all she did was mope around. Sure she can mope a little, Nate's going insane of course she's going to be sad about it. But her grades dropping wasn't just because she was worrying, it was because she was in love with him and was thinking lovely thoughts about him. Her chances of getting a scholarship are now very thin because she was thinking about a boy. It annoyed me as well because she didn't even spend her study time trying to find a cure, she was spending her study time moping because she couldn't find a cure. But that was before she went to New York for a tour of the University. I was glad when she started wanting to go here again and could see herself going here and enjoying it.One of the things I like about this book is that most of the characters could be main characters, meaning more series and spin offs. For example, Megan had her own mini story within the book. She got cast in a massive blockbuster film and starts dating her co-star. I would love to read about Megan and what she goes through while filming this movie and the fame after. I would also love to read more about Nate and his back story. He had a tough time as a kid with really bad anger issues and really bad parents who just gave up on him. I think it would be really great to read about his life and struggles. Another character I would like to read about is Ethan. I'm not sure why but I find his character really interesting and would like to know more, hopefully the second book in the series will tell us more about him. There a plenty more characters that I would like to know more about but I won't list them because it'll be going on for ages.To sum it up the book was really worth reading and Teresa Orts is a great writer. The plot was great, the characters even greater, and the history was really interesting. I wonder what will happen in the next book. less
