review 1: Excellent! I knew from the title that I would like it. At first, the CNN/news-style reporting of the endeavors was a little off putting. The writer tried, but I don't think the heart break came across as strong as it could have - I mean, leaving a dog - and you know it will most certainly die - alone - probably beaten/starving - and wondering where you went... well that has got to be extremely traumatic! The work these rescuers did was wonderful. After powering thru the first couple chapters, I found myself crying a lot! I know, that from a public health standpoint, the mental health of our soldiers is so important (and a struggle to attain when back state-side) and these dogs were a blessing from God. But I never realized that they were also a blessing for the Moms/... moreWifes/Sisters back in the US, knowing that their war torn soldiers had a source of comfort/laughter/bonding (great stories from each in the book). The last chapter with "where are they now" stories, was my favorite.
review 2: This book was a fantastic account of how important animals are to humans and the therapeutic bond they make with us. I am so glad for the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals for starting this endeavor and believing that animals can help heal these soldiers! Too many of our men are coming home mentally damaged, committing suicide, struggling with PTSD, and alcoholism due to the war. If a cat or dog can heal that by coming home with them, I think it's a wonderful idea!!! less
