Samuel Craddock Mystery
review 1: My favorite murder mystery series debut of 2013, I think. The series detective, retired chief of police Samuel Craddock, will remind you of your favorite classic sleuths. Agatha Christie is my favorite novelist, so naturally Samuel Craddock, an old man, easily underestimated, living in a small town where everyone knows everyone, solving a crime that the police can't solve, a crime that they would say is not his business to involve himself in, made me think of Miss Marple. Craddock's interest in art made me think of Nero Wolfe and his orchids. Unlike most of the classic detectives, this "Holmes" does not really have a "Watson," though it will be easy enough for Shames to add one later if she chooses. The setting is rural and small town East Texas, with a few chapters ... moreset in Houston. Shames draws the reader into the setting beautifully, whether you've been to East Texas or not. Not only is Craddock the kind of main character you look forward to seeing again in sequels, but so are many of the secondaries. As far as the plot, it is original, entertaining, enlightening, and told to perfection, as are the book's subplots. I can't say enough good things about this novel. If you like a good murder mystery, of just a good story in general, buy, borrow, or download this book posthaste.
review 2: I won a copy of this book in a goodreads giveaway. This a the first in what I hope will be a long-running series. Retired chief of police Samuel Craddock lives in rural Jarret Creek, Texas, and in this book he gets involved in the aftermath of a friend's murder. This is a well-written, entertaining mystery, and Samuel Craddock is a likable, multi-faceted character. If you like the Milt Kovack, Dan Rhodes, or Walt Longmire mysteries, you will want to read "A Killing at Cotton Creek". Once you do, you too will be waiting impatiently for the next Samuel Craddock book, due in January 2014. less
