Paladin Warriors
review 1: Setting: New York City loft; Haven; bar/alley; cabin: etherworld;Theme: will over desire; loss of soul (or not); soul mate; good v evilCharacters:Paladin:“Created , by the one God. Each Paladin warrior was chosen from volunteers who stepped forward from the ranks of His angels. They were given various gifts and sent to earth to protet His children from the evils seeping into the world.”“For every Paladin that He created he also created a soul that would perfectly match. It was something every Paladin dreamed of: finding his soul mate.”There are 9 male Paladins to every 1 female Paladins – and no new ones created… they are desperate for mates - Roland: a Paladin born – but when 150 years old, returned home, greeted by a demon succubi who enthralled him while... more a demon/vampire killed his family, and then turned him into a vampire; he had a few years of blood lust, but a Paladin friend sent to kill him recognizes some good in him, he is rescued, mental ties to the master vamp cut, and he has lived 95 years without succumbing to the blood lust again – in honor of the man and the values he once held (and because he has a good heart/soul); he stays hidden from the Paladin, except for his friend; he creates a sterile environment that insulates him from the blood and emotions of humans, he hunts evil men, taking a bit of their blood and ‘persuading’ them to be good; he finds his soulmate in Karissa, whom his friend brings to him for safekeeping – and he knows he is not worthy of her, as he does not have a soul;Karissa Donovan: Paladin father, gifted/part Paladin mother; but mother turned vampire and her father killed her, and she was raised by her grandfather – who kept her hidden as best he could, telling her vampires are evil, and to be inside at night; but at 24 years old, she decided to take a night class – and a vampire followed her home… and the next day she returns home to find her grandfather killed and bad things waiting for her… her gifts – teleportation, and ‘seeing’ ones intent with a touch; a virgin still; she goes to Logan Calhoun for protection (her grandfather told her to seek him out) – but gets her brother, not her father (not knowing of her relationship to them at all); Logan takes her to Roland… and the first 2 nights she fights him tooth and nail, fearful of vampires; unknown to her, she is a high value commodity to the Paladins… and therefore to the demons – not only because of her potential pain to the Paladins, but also because her blood can gift a vampire the ability to walk in the daylight.Logan Calhoun: drawn to Karissa, not knowing she is his halfsister; when she begs him to take her to the Paladins for safety (she is fearful of her reaction to Roland’s kiss), he reluctantly does so… and of course the twenty Paladin in council quarters are all eager to mark/mate her; Logan Calhoun, Sr.: fathered Karissa, killed her mother when she made a vamp; fearful of Roland’s father’s sight of his daughter of light, so kept her hidden; he is head of the Paladin council;Ganelon: high lord demon; aware of the power of Karissa’s blood, and wants her taken alive;Christos: used by Ganelon to locate the woman; he is a cruel master vampire, who angry when thinks of how Roland broke their binds; Gabriella: a minion of Christos; she fights him as best she can – has not taken anyone’s blood – is forcefed blood by Christos; she admires, and helps Roland when she can;Valin: aka Black Knight; Paladin; a bit cold; rival of Roland; can teleport (differently than karissa); he starts to mark Karissa for his own, but is interrupted by demons… and then he assists Logan and Roland to recover her when she is taken – seeing the good/Paladin side of Roland as strong;Summary:Introduction into the Paladin culture…Logan went to Haven to try and bring karissa back to safety… and when she sees the truth of what they want (to take away her free will), and she reflects on how Roland made her feel safe – even from himself, she knows she belongs to/with him; she pushes him to consummate their union – the first time, he brings her to climax, and denies himself, afraid of giving into his vampiric side and taking her blood… but the next time, when she realizes he is not rejecting her, but protecting her, she shares the mating words/commitment with him, and offers herself… and though there is a bit of bloodlust with him, through their connection, he is tied to light, and is in control…She is taken from him, he follows with Logan and then Valin… they get to her, but she is dying (the demons took too much blood)… and he reluctantly turns her vamp so she will heal; Valin rescues Gabriella (who was given some of Karissa’s blood)… and Logan lets out his gift – an overflowing of God’s light, that kills the demons… but not Karissa, Gabriella, or Roland – who all have her blood… proving to the Paladins that vampires are not soulless, or necessarily unloved by God… ahhh
review 2: DNF. I tried a couple of times to get into this book and to be honest I thought it had a fantastic start. I was totally into it until about 20% in when I hit a brick wall and found it very hard to get any further in. I think this is because a situation comes up in the story and you are told that if the heroine goes to a particular place it will be a very bad thing so naturally where is the heroine taken? I hate that kind of thing and while I read through to about 37% I just couldn't get myself past it. less
