review 1: Written as verse poetry, Thalia Chaltas's novel, Because I Am Furniture, tackles the gritty topic of abusive relationships within a family. The reader peeks into Anke's world, oftentimes with a cringe. Emotions run the gamut from giddiness, to rage, to deep despair. Simply, but powerfully written, Because I Am Furniture, will have you turning the pages even when you feel just a bit guilty for knowing what Anke is going through.
review 2: Anke struggles to find her voice throughout this book, written in verse form. She cannot find the words to say that her father is abusing her family. Through her high school volleyball team she finds her voice. That she can speak out and that her voice matters. That she is important. That she is not as invisible and unimportant
... more as the furniture in her house. This book and topic of abuse is heartbreaking, and then inspiring when Anke finds her voice. One negative aspect of the book, for me at least, is that Anke seems so intelligent but tells her story in a juvenile manner at times. I originally thought the book was going to be written as a traditional novel, not as poetry. I was a bit disappointed by this. The overall message of finding your strength, speaking out against abuse, and that you matter made me enjoy the book. The poetry and juvenile attitude at times detracted from it. less
