review 1: This is basically a story about grief, and how a married couple is dealing with it in the context of their history together. At first I didn't care for the story because I didn't like the main character, but it's very well written and the twists and turns the story takes make it a compelling read. In the end I felt mostly a sense of compelling loss and sorrow for the characters in the book. Definitely not a light-hearted read.
review 2: i found this psychological thriller to be disappointingly uneven. After being drawn in by the opening half of the book, narrated by the obviously unreliable and unbalanced Arthur Winthrop,headmaster of Lancaster Academy, I was let down by the ensuing section focused on Elizabeth, his wife, which became fairly dull. I appreciate... more that the two styles of narration reflect the two characters' differing reactions to a devastating event in their lives, but the novel just sort of fizzled for me in the second half, and the resolution was a little too neat and tidy. less
