review 1: I don't give out five star reviews easily, but this book has definitely earned it. This book should be required reading for all Canadians. Writer Thomas King takes his reader through a number of native issues; sovereignty, land claims, residential schools, etc. He uses lots of examples and some humour. I learned a lot about the history of American Indians. I haven't read many books about Natives in the United States, and I really want to learn more. This book is so extremely well done that it's impossible not to learn something while you read it. It took King six years to write this book, and he claims that it nearly killed him. He said he won't write any more non-fiction. It's hard to believe that it was so hard for him to write this book, because he makes the writing loo... morek effortless. I will admit that this is not necessary a light read, because there's so much history in this book. And if you read this book and don't feel angry at how North America has treated its native peoples, there is something wrong with you.
review 2: A must read. This accessible account of history tackles over 500 years worth of flawed relationships between Aboriginal and non-aboriginal people in Canada and the USA. Sharply intellectual and informative, yet humourous and delightfully personal, King unearths the myths and misunderstandings about Aboriginal peoples, and the history and ongoing colonial violence — and there is certainly a lot to dig up. If it’s solidarity, wisdom and outstanding creative non-fiction you’re after, get yourself a copy of The Inconvenient Indian. less
