2 days in Vienna

The architecture in Vienna is spectacular, the buildings are massive, gleamingly clean and are the definition of grandeur.

My top sights to see:

  • St Stephens Cathedral – towering above the shops in the centre of the city.
  • The museum quarter – stop for a mulled wine in one of the stalls in the courtyard.
  • Haus of musik – this is an attack on the senses, the museum takes you through the science of sound and is very interactive. There is also a floor dedicated to the great composers of the city.
  • Vienna opera house – a must in the city of music.
  • Wiener Rathaus – when we first saw this building it was lit up in the night sky and looked like something out of a fairytale. From its location you can walk along to the Parliament buildings or the Spanish horse riding school, both impressive grand buildings.

Getting around

There is a ring road (ringstraße) around the centre of Vienna. Whether you take the tram or hire city bikes, you can reach all the attractions from the ringstraße, including the museum quarter, the river and the Vienna opera house. It’s a great way to see the sights and get your bearings.

Eating and drinking

Breakfast – For good strong coffee and a selection of veggie breakfasts, Cafe Berg is a great choice for your first meal of the day. It’s just down the road from the Freud museum and next to the biggest LGBT bookshop in Europe.

Lunch – Vegiezz on the ring road not far from the museum quarter has a delicious vegan menu. Wraps, burgers, Buddha bowls and vegan wine and beer are on offer for a descent price.

Beer – 1516 has tasty pale ales from its own brewery. The pretzel with mustard is also to die for. You’re find it across the road from the Haus of Musik in the city centre. We named it as the best beer in Vienna, what do you think?

Dinner (wine) – We actually skipped dinner and drunk local wine instead but our setting of the Vienna night market had a dozen cafes and restaurants to choose from and looked to be popular with the locals.
