review 2: Before the University of Akron (my alma mater-go Zips!) published an article about a 'new chapter' in a fellow alum's life, I'd never heard of Thomas Koloniar. But the book sounded interesting, so I looked it up. And then since the Kindle version wasn't pricey, I downloaded it. Fast-paced and exciting, I started reading last night, tore myself away for a few hours of sleep, then finished it this morning before work. It's pretty much made for a movie - action-packed, with some real-life moments and bits of comedy thrown in. In spite of the exciting story, I was disappointed by a few things. The biggest disappointment by far was the women in this story. From the beginning, women are seen as things to be protected. No woman seems to be capable of defending herself; every woman is just a victim waiting to happen. If a strong handsome man happens to want to protect a woman, she's ready and willing to jump into bed with him. Is there no heterosexual woman in Koloniar's world who can stand up for herself? There's only one woman in this story who's not a weak, simpering, goes-along-with-whatever-the-man-in-charge-tells-her-is-best, rape victim waiting to happen. She's tough, spunky, and takes out the bad guys just as easily as the men do. She's also a lesbian, which apparently made a difference. She gets to shoot guns and grenade launchers, and apparently is able to shake off brutal encounters like nothing's happened. Good to know. I'd like to think that when shit hits the fan, I'll be standing with the men, shooting down the bad guys, protecting my own. But apparently I'll need to switch teams first. Otherwise I'll be doing too much cowering, screaming, and crying to even hold the gun.Second, most of the characters felt flat and obvious. Tough guy green berets are tough, smart teenager does smart stuff, weak women cower and cry. I kept losing track of the women's names... they all seemed like the same character. I had hope for Veronica in the beginning, but once she moved into the silo she fell flat. Third, the romance was lacking - it felt like the romantic relationships were thrown in at the last minute as a way to placate female readers. There's more to a romantic relationship than sex.All that being said, I am looking forward to his next story. Hopefully, though, the women will be stronger. less
