review 1: I adore what this comic has become. Reynard has become one of my favorite characters, and Coyote is starting to show that he isn't just a laughing matter after all. My opinions of all the characters change and fluctuate with each chapter, which I think is necessary for loving them all truly in the end. Genuinely amazed at how this had progressed and become a fully fledged, beautiful comic.
review 2: This volume collects the chapters 32-41 of the webcomic Gunnerkrigg Court. The comic follows Antimony Carver through her years at the mysterious titular school, and builds as it goes along. Starting at the beginning is best. The first three volumes of GC featured a deep, gradually unfolding story centered on a core of diverse, compelling characters. Volume 3 containe
... mored a great balance of twists and reveals vs foreshadowing for the future and kept suspense high without stringing the reader along. It ended with a new status quo looking to add a lot of intrigue. The direction of opening chapter of this volume threw me a bit. It makes sense, and was executed wonderfully as usual, but given the end of the last volume I was REALY expecting/hoping for something else. I got over it quick though, as Siddell's narrative about a strange school and the conflicts of technology and mysticism is as good as ever. Numerous long running plot threads come to critical points, often resolving in most unexpected manners, while new mysteries and complications arise. The layered storytelling is just magnificent. Most reveals are approached sideways as other important events take place, without ever overwhelming or confusing the reader. Many characters have hidden and conflicting agendas that are just beginning to be unveiled in small pieces. Even what little we know so far about the myths and greater world of GC is absolutely fascinating. The real treat of course is how three dimensional the characters are and the significant development several of them go through. There's more than just the happenings at court and in the forest going on as Annie and Kat grow up in GC. Neither is perfect in action nor attitude, but they try to learn from their mistakes and figure life out as they go like anyone else. They are affected by their experiences, with the past impacting their worldview, personalities, and interactions with other characters significantly. It's wonderful to watch and one of the main reason GC is such an engrossing read. The supporting cast is equally well formed and developed, with Parley, Zimmy and Jones particularly shining in these chapters. The art, which was always good, has evolved into something incredible. The unique style is the perfect counterpart to the story and its details, dramatic touches and superb coloring are great assets/enhancements to the comic. As with the previous volumes I read these chapters online and then looked through the printed edition. It's a very nice hardbound book about the size of a smaller prose hardcover (instead of the standard larger "standard" graphic novel size) with high quality paper and printing, including very vivd colors. I will mention again that the darker colors are so saturated sometimes you can't see some of the wonderful detail work and highlights that stand out in the online version (where the hues are lighter). It's a small complaint, but it is worth mentioning there's a minor unintentional difference between the two versions.Gunnerkrigg Court continues to be one of the best webcomics there is.Highest possible recommendation. less
