Better Nate Than Ever
review 1: This book is an Awesome-cake covered in Awesome-sauce with a cherry on top!! That is how much I love it!! If you enjoyed the first book you will be all over this one!Nate Foster is funny and quirky and genuine. You get to live his excitement of his first Broadway show. It is exciting and dejecting all at one. He truly embodies the idea of there are no small parts. Just being in a Broadway show is a huge feat! He takes the time to appreciate all the small victories along the way. The supporting cast only gets better with this book. Such kooky Broadway types. I love the whole backstage feel of the book. From an inside POV, it is dead on! Jordan's mom could head the Mommy Mafia on Broadway. And poor Jordan, while he has such talent, you have to wonder does he even want to do ... morethis? The story has some utterly brilliant themes, behind all that Broadway glitter. You have Nate who is deciding who he is, and accepting his own sexuality. The struggle he has fitting into his middle America kind of family. Bullying in many forms, some more subtle than others. In the end the good guy prevails and a glimmer of hope shines through!I listened to the audiobook narrated by the author Tim Federle, who is fabulous! Usually it is a bad idea to have the author narrate, they rarely succeed as actors. That is not the case here, Tim is so talented and in-tune with his material. He brings Nate to life in a way that you can not help but love. Great pace and voices. Brimming with enthusiasm!I love this book and the positive messages it conveys. It is tough being a kid without putting all the extra labels on top. I can only hope to find more of this authors fabulous work!!!
review 2: It's usually the case in a series that sequels are not as good as first books, but not in this case. I really liked Better Nate Than Ever, but I loved this second installment. Part of that is because our hero, Nate, is finally in his element, doing a show on Broadway. Part of it is that the emotional beats to the story- never overdone, but written so you feel things right in your gut- are great. Part of it is that some of the complaints I had about the first one are fixed, above and beyond my expectations. Federle retains his penchant for humorous writing, but develops other aspects this time around, to great effect. Completely won me over. less
