review 1: It could have been the way the audio book was read, but I am thinking it was more of a text issue...The best way I can describe it that the novel comes off like a historical fiction DaVinci code without the "good" writing. The book needed to be edited down and streamlined if they were going for a page-turning mystery or needed to be taken out and reframed if it wanted to be a more "slice of life" from the time period piece. It was interesting to hear about how DC was during this time (Swampdoodle, Foggy Bottom), but the pace of the central mystery was so slow that by the time it ended, I was just thankful it was over.
review 2: What if the assassination of President Lincoln had been part of a larger plot? What if its execution was known and supported in governm
... moreent, as well as the larger political community? O’Brien posits this, loosely, in his fiction debut. The book reads in a slow-paced fashion (akin to the era) and plods along, chasing this idea throughout, complete with mysterious cipher and an ever-evolving plot that grows as more information is peeled back. While the premise is strong, the delivery is somewhat lethargic and leaves something to be desired, for certain. Holding it up to, say, Stephen L. Carter’s The Impeachment of Abraham Lincoln, a book also recently penned and written to cover the same time period, it holds some water. That said, the era may pull both writers’ abilities back, as they are constrained to what was on hand. The story and plot were tepid, though the characters in O’Brien’s work did prove somewhat interesting. With no experience as it relates to O’Brien, I have nothing with which to compare this work. The sound plot cannot be argued, though perhaps I am jaded, as I have seen historical plots laid out in a much better fashion (see Dan Brown, Steve Berry, Charles Brokaw, even Stephen L. Carter). That said, it is by no means a wasted effort in reading the book. The reader should just be aware of what they are entering and hope for the best… as it does have some strong moments, though they are few and far between.Good work Mr. O’Brien. Keep up the good work! less

Just plain overblown. Awful writing, uninteresting characters.
