review 1: This book, at first, felt like it was a repeat of all the others. The same characters and pretty much with the same plots. Emily repeatedly gets captured and beaten up, which seems to happen over and over again. At some point while reading this I thought I was finally getting tired of the series, but then, something big happens (can't say what...don't want to spoil it for others)and for the first time while reading this entire series, I cried. Couldn't stop crying seemed like for 3 chapters. Even with the tragedy, I was excited again to be reading this series. I struggled to give this story a 4 or a 3. I eventually decided on a 3 because there is a point in this book where yet once again Chevalier, Kyle, Kralen, Mark, & Silas have to leave Emily behind with guards sh... moree doesn't know. Anyone that has read the other books know that when this happens, something always happens to Emily. "HELLO", by now you would think that at least one out of the 5 of them would be smart enough to know that there needed to be one person left with her to watch out for her. Like let's say, any one of her kids - Allen, Alexis, or Dain or by all means, I think Anna would have been great, she seems to care alot for her, or the doctor? This seems to be the one place in this book, where the writer could have tried to come up with some reason for no one to have been available to watch over Emily in their absense. Not only could she not come up with any logical reason, but she also failed in her writing by having Chevelier yell at Dain as he's walking out the door, pointing out the fact that he was staying behind, by saying "I've already told you and I'm not going to say it again" which implies that Chevelier isn't allowing Dain to go with them. Come on could you not spell it out for us next time. Dain was left behind! Why could he not have went with Emily. She was taken to Powan to be guarded while they were out to war and instead was buried alive by the same people supposed to be protecting her. HELLO!!!
review 2: I want to start by saying I actually liked the first six books of the series very much. I just don't understand what happened in the last book; I don't think I have ever been so let down by what happened. Never in my entire time of reading series books have I seen such a complete break of character for a main one. In books 1-6 the main character of Emily is strong confident sarcastic stubborn a fast rebounder tempermental out-spoken and a prankster. In this book not only does the author not have her as any of those but makes her the complete opposite of each. She is submissive weak quiet and reclusive. I understood reasons based on the plot but the author didn't even attempt to bring the character out of the stump they put them in. It would have taken time in the story and time was given with no turn around. Emily had been through many turmultuous events throughout every single book that should have broken her and never did until the end. I wish I had stopped at six to not see the complete humiliation the author gave. You simply cannot create such a stubborn strong headed character and then not let it end with them bouncing back with the same tenacity as the other books in the series. I am at a loss for what truly happened to the real Emily of this series. less
