review 1: I have heard stories of Babayaga, which is why this book caught my attention. It is not really what I was expected, and as I am not Russian maybe the stories I heard were wrong. There are multiple character story lines but they are all entwined. I think that was my problem with the book. I couldn't get invested as once I start getting into what I am reading, the author switches to another character. The book was okay but overall I just couldn't get into it.
review 2: 'Babayaga' is an interesting and an unusual type of novel. The 1950's storyline is based on Russian folklore, spies, witches (Babayagas) and magic. The witches Elga and Zoya have killed and magically turned people into animals (ie Rats, Fleas, etc) over the years. The novel opens with Zoya killi... moreng a long time lover who sees she is not aging as expected. French Inspector Vidot investigates the murder and the bizarre story unfolds. less
