review 1: In the end I liked the book quite a lot. I have to say though that the first half didn't impress me much, it felt repetitive, and I wondered if there was ever going to be anything of real importance, any message, in the book. In addition, something that had happened to Skipper as a child felt totally unnecessary for the plot, and I worried about it maybe conveying a wrong kind of message. But the second half...it got better and better all the time, it was more and more gripping, and it was great to see Skipper grow, and become proud and aware, until towards the end he said proudly: “I’m a gay boy.” That was for me the best moment in the book.Maybe also the thing that I worried about in the beginning, the way Skipper saw his bad childhood experience affecting himself, ... morehis sexuality, was a consequence of his not being aware yet of certain things. Towards the end he seemed to have developed some deeper awareness about being homosexual.Quite an interesting read towards the end, with an ending that leaves you optimistic about things.
review 2: I found this awful, eveyone took advantage of Skipper and abused him in some way. We got hints of his background but much of the book was him cleaning himself, lusting about Lake or being bullied. This was just awful, badly written, bad plot, bad characters. I really regret buying this and the time I took to read it, I had to make myself finish just to see if there was a redeeming ending or anything that might make me like it - nothing. I have read so many books and this is the worst I have ever come across.I urge everyone not to waste their time or money. I really don't get how some people have five starred this even with differing tastes - baffling. less
