review 1: While i expected more of a mystery, it was a pleasant coming of age(s)/acceptance transcendental tale. It was an enjoyably ponderous look at a myriad of people loosely connected. Very tight writing. Drury is a great master of dialogue, i wanted to hear more conversations. Most of my opionions of the significant characters changed by the end of the book. There are subtle motifs in this book ranging from the country life, small towns, cars, criminals, and love. One day i would like to reread this book, but i would rather pick up an older Drury book before rereading Pacific.
review 2: Having liked Drury's earlier book The End of Vandalism, I was eager to read this new one. It has many of the same characters but it opens years later in time. I love Drury's dry sens
... moree of humor, his characters' wonderful names and habits (my favorite is Tiny, the petty thief)and his spare writing style. Not much happens; situations remain unresolved. The pace is slow. The book's chapters alternate between the Midwest to LA, and the contrast between lives in the two disparate locations is strong. I loved revisiting the characters I met in the earlier book. I'd recommend you read The End of Vandalism first, then go on to read this one. less
