review 1: Probably more like 3.5 but I'll give him the difference. I've never had the pleasure of visiting NO. Always wanted to. Wish I'd had the opportunity to do so pre-Katrina as I think this book probably resonates more powerfully with those who have. It's a pretty small book so even a resolute non-fiction avoider could probably get through it and find it worth their time (I *might* have someone particular in mind). Without a personal knowledge of the region, I still felt the hit of the Katrina devastation description, and I always appreciate good food writing. This was a great way to bring the two together.
review 2: I started off in total adoration of this book - all sorts of great stories from an almost-insider perspective on some of the greatest restaurants
... more, chefs, and restauranteurs of New Orleans back in the day. What I came to realize as I read on, though, was that Tom F. is a bit more of an elitist than I would care to take recommendations from, and while I admire his dedication to the city, I didn't end up won over by any means. I definitely loved some of the old stories from Pre-K NOLA, but felt more like he was bragging about the coattails he rides on than doing justice to the NOLA food scene, past or present. less

Too brief, but loaded with factoids.
