review 1: This is an amazing read. It gives such insight into the beginnings of the three Abahamic faiths and how they were all intertwined and interconnected. Holland provides a detailed and fascinating history of a period of history that shaped the modern world as we know it. While much is written about the later Roman empire, not as much literature exists that looks at the Iranshahr, the later Persian empire that competed with the Romans before being swept away by the rise of the Arab empire. Most interesting was Holland's examination of the roots of Islam and how the origins of what Muslims believe today are just as muddied as Christianity and Judaism. Cannot recommend enough!
review 2: While I've enjoyed some of Holland's other work I feel he's missed the boat here
... moreby setting his cap at Patricia Crone, the Danish Orientalist who makes most modern scholars of Islam/Arabia come all over giggles; he might have read Wilferd Madelung instead, or at least used his fellow BBC-wallah, Richard Miles', skeptical attitude towards 'scholars' who simply tell their side of the story, especially a discredited, Orientalist one... all in all Reza Aslan is the far better read for a history of Islam's beginnings. less

A must read for those interested in the critical and non-traditional view of the beginning of Islam.

An important book; it's good to know that Islam is as confused and muddled as Christianity.

Confusing narrative... Couldn't get to grips with it... Saving it for later...

Very good but also agree with the criticism of it.
