review 1: This book hooked me in part because the writing is compelling and accurate to teenage life, and in part because it served to remind me of how much of a tool I was in high school. I do think, however, that the ending causes it to fall flat. It came close to being really good, but I feel there wasn't enough of a lesson passed on by the experiences of the protagonist. Like, *spoilers*, your crush throws herself at you because she's using sex to escape her problems and you decide that you should just be a friend to her. "For now." It's that 'for now' that really bugs me. Like, no real internalization of the idea that your crushes are people with needs outside of your desire for them, no reflection on how the way the girl was using lots and lots of unprotected sex as an escape ... moremechanism is seriously dangerous and mentally unhealthy, and not even a strong emphasis on how the girl needs ACTUAL MENTAL HELP immediately, not just a friend who is still kinda in love with her. I get that some of this is implied, but I don't think that these messages, to the extent that they're there, are clear enough to make a lasting impression. This came close to being a book with really good messages for teens, especially teen boys, but while I can see this being of some help to that demographic, it could have and should have gone a LOT farther.
review 2: I absolutely loved reading this. When they said that this was Say Anything meets 500 Days of Summer, they weren't kidding. And they kept raving about his book's "voice"...boy,were they right again. I just love coming-of-age, love stories told from the point of view of the guy. Plus, I'm such a sucker for stories that happen in the course of one night or one day...like Nick & Nora's Infinite Playlist or Say Anything. And troubled dream girls! Seriously, this book has all of the elements that I look for in a story. less
