review 1: The book Sick by Tom Leveen is a fiction/horror story. The story is set in the 2000's where there are iPods and iPhones. This book is about a high schooler named Brian and his friends who try to make it out alive from a deadly outbreak. Most of the school is infected with a virus that started from one patient, patient Zero. Brian's mom is a scientist in the lab where the patient was and she was the one in charge of the patient but luckily she made it out alive. Brian and his friends do unbelievable things to get out of the school which helps out in the end. Brian is trying to mainly save his sister, Mackenzie, and his ex-girlfriend, Laura. There are many conflicts involving the group which I love because it makes the book a lot more interesting than it already is. Many peo... moreple fight for their lives even if they have to leave their own people to survive. I would definitely recommend this book to people my age. I believe the theme is survival of the fittest because there were many parts in the book where people are left behind or when people do unforgettable things to get out of the school. In my opinion, I feel this book deserves a ten because this book shows how even the kindest of people can turn into monsters.
review 2: Reviewed from ARC. The back cover promises “The Breakfast Club meets The Walking Dead,” and Leveen almost delivers. After skipping AM classes, high school students Brian and Chad return to their PM periods as techies in the drama department for the easy credit. Since the school has experienced previous riots, the school is fenced and heavily guarded, which ultimately works against them. A mysterious illness, which causes crystalline scales and a taste for human bones, spreads rapidly through the student population. The theater students successfully barricade themselves in the theater and backstage areas which also offer roof access. Brian, Chad and several other students (one Mexican and one gay) go on a rescue mission to find survivors and escape. They partially succeed, but lose some of their numbers in the process. The ending promises a Book 2, although the cover announces no series. The zombie element is solid, and the writing is cinematic – the roof scenes are especially well-done. Chad has enlisted in the Marines, Brian almost lost his sister to cancer and is determined not to lose her to this new sickness, Travis is a gay leading-man, Jaime is a Mexican artistic director, Laura has mental health issues, Damon is the fat kid, Cammy is the head cheerleader from the ghetto, Kat is the tiny-but-mighty chick, etc. And they all realize that none of this matters in the face of gory death. The teen-typed characters are Sick’s flaw, but not enough to discourage further reading. less
