review 1: I picked this book up from Amazon for my Kindle for $1.99. Definitely a bargin at the price, and certainly a great jumping off point for anyone really wanting to explore music.I have to say though; my feelings toward the book were tainted from the first chapter when the author listed Fiona Apple's second album (the incredibly pretenious one (oh wait, that describes ALL of Apple's music!) with the title 90 words long) as a recording I "must hear" before I die. REALLY?!!??!?Fiona frickin' Apple? You included her over say, anything by Wanda Jackson? U2's "Achtung Baby"? What about some contemporary country music/musicians (which I felt was sorely lacking) like Mary Chapin Carpenter or Vince Gill? Eva Cassidy? I could go on, but seriously, FIONA APPLE? Give me a b... morereak.
review 2: Earlier this year, in one of the all time (ALL TIME) great fits of serendipity, I copped this book for $.99 from Amazon in one of those gold box deals (literally less than a tenth of one cent per page), then a guy from Spotify hooked me up with free Spotify Premium, then I found a playlist with all of the songs and albums in this book on it. There's also an official site and some sort of Amazon site where you can cop a lot of the albums on mp3. I've spent the last few months reading straight through and listening to quite a few of the albums I either never heard before or haven't heard in a while. It's been one of the best uses of my time that's appropriate to mention on Goodreads. Though I'm not sure if that definitely is the best way to go about it. This book is 1000+ pages long, and it's got as much jazz and classical (who needs 'em?) as rock. People who work for a living need not apply. less
