review 1: ‘Herman's Letter’ made by Tom Percival brings a beautiful story for the youngest readers that speaks about the power of everlasting friendship.Herman the Bear and Henry the Raccoon are the best friends ever since they know each for the other - growing up together, these two spent all the time together playing and exploring world around them. But one day Henry will have to move away which would made them both very sad.Still two friends agreed they will write letters each day to stay in touch, trying everything to be as close as it was before when they were spending days together. Henry will keep his promise, writing about everything what is happening in his new environment, new friends he met, even the weather, but there was no Herman's letter.Herman didn't know about w... morehat to write because life without Henry was boring, he was lonely and sad, even the rain was pouring constantly. He became even jealous that Henry will forget about him. And then letter arrived, Henry writing that he misses his friend and Herman wanted to write back. But to his surprise post office is closed for the winter, therefore Herman will need to think quick about some other way of delivering message to his old friend…This is first Tom Percival book I read, though for sure will not be the last given how well-made and charming ‘Herman's Letter’ book is. The author delivered an interesting story about friendship in which many children around the world will recognize their situation – separation from the best friend.Beside beautiful story and good lesson it brought, this children book is complemented with cartoon-like, detailed, multicolored and cheerful illustrations. Also, as nice add-on, the additional interactive content was provided – real letters presented in an entertaining lift-the-flaps style which will intrigue young reader and keep kid engaged in the story. Therefore, taking into account nice and motivating story, beautiful artwork and interactive content, ‘Herman's Letter’ is certainly picture book that can highly be recommended equally for all the elements that make some book for children great.
review 2: Herman’s Letter is a sweet and simple little read about a pair of best friends, Herman the Bear and Henry the Racoon. They are bestest of friends but Henry has to move far away. This book follows Herman on his epic adventure to deliver a very special letter to Henry.I really enjoyed reading this book as it is very visual and the illustrations, also by Tom Percival, are very soft and charming. Children will love to admire the illustrations whilst following along with the story. I find it moving but also uplifting, as it is about a strong bond between two quite unlikely characters, a big brown bear and a little racoon, who are pulled apart from each other by distance. This book would be a good story for children in Reception or Year 1 (aged 4-6), as children will be beginning to secure their own bonds/friendships with other children, therefore allowing them to become familiar with the emotions the book portrays. The book allows for the children to understand positive relationships, it could be read as part of a PSED session, as well as getting them to think about feelings and emotion. The language in the story is very descriptive which is ideal for introducing children to new vocabulary and how to use describing words. Another lovely feature of this book is the lift-flap letters on each page. Herman’s Letter would be a really good topic book that could be used in Literacy, getting children to write their own letters to a friend (suitable for Reception and Key Stage 1). Herman’s Letter is accessible for young children to read independently as well as in a class situation as the language is appropriate for them read, and most of it can be read phonetically. This is a lovely book with a heart-warming story line that I’m sure children will fall in love with! less
