review 1: I really liked this book. The ending has a shocking surprise which I was not aware would happen. This book won a Caldecott medal. The illustrations are very google in this book. It is interesting because there is not a lot of color put into this book but when it is there it makes a great statement. After reading the story and then going back again I caught things in the pictures that I did not pick up on the first time. This is a very cute story and very nicely illustrated book.
review 2: I love the illustrations, detail, style, and surprise ending of this book. I'm only giving it 4 stars because I don't like the idea of a kid keeping a penguin as a pet or keeping all these wild animals at an aquarium, but setting my qualms with the key plot element aside, ... moreI adore this story. It makes for a great read-aloud for my kindergarteners and 1st graders. I'm sure the older kids would enjoy it, too. less
