review 1: The children of a solitary island lighthouse keeper eagerly await their Christmas visit to the mainland. However, a storm prevents their holiday travel and leaves the children wondering if Santa will find them and whether much needed food supplies will arrive. The storm tossed, perilous sea finds the daughter in charge of the lighthouse as her father must go out to rescue a man from a capsized boat. Christmas finds the family celebrating a simple meal with the rescued sailor. As the children go outside to look for anything on the barren island they can use to make the day festive, they are surprised by a plane dropping presents and supplies from the sky. Founded in 1929, the flying Santa service brought presents to lighthouse families and is the basis for this s... moretory.
review 2: An isolated island off Maine, stormy weather, and the Depression cause Frances concern that Christmas this year might disappoint little brother Peter, especially after the recent loss of their mother. Bad weather had prevented the supply boat from reaching them, so that they had run out of almost everything, even sugar to make cookies. Even worse, as the weather deteriorates, Father sees a fishing boat whose occupant needs rescuing, leaving Frances to guard the light. How these challenges are resolved makes a warm and satisfying story, highlighting a service that has been in existence since 1929. Good addition to the Christmas collection. less
